Hello everybody,

Needing a VPN-compatible router, I am considering the purchase of a Fritzbox 7390. I have a 'triple play' Belgacom 'Comfort' subscription for TV (VDSL), Internet and telephone (VOIP) and would just like to know if the Fritzbox 7390 is compatible and easy to set up. As far as I heard, the Fritz needs to be installed after the BBox 2 which needs to be bridged. The wealth of information on the Fritz in this forum is just overwhelming and I would very much appreciate if someone could indicate me a helpful link concerning the configuration of the BBox2 and the Fritz according to my needs.

thanks in advance for any post in English, German or French

The FritzBox 7390 is a VDSL2 modem and replaces the bbox2. I believe, with international firmware, there are predefined options for Belgacom VDSL2 with Belgacom TV. I don't have any experience with the 7390 though, philippe_d will certainly be able to answer this question ;-)

You might want to elaborate on the phone part. You say your triple with Belgacom and VOIP,but they no longer offer VOIP to non-business users. For internet&TV you can just replace your bbox with a fb7390, as long as you buy an international version. It's just plug&play (just choose belgacom+tv during installation). The (sometimes cheaper) german version needs to be reflashed before hou can do this.
There is Voip support(with fritz!fon or iphone/android app). In the manual there is also support for old-school non-voip phones, but i have no experience with it.
I have a Scarlet internet+tv(before that it was belgacom) & 3starsnet voip.
And the basic setup was done in about 15 minutes and it all worked.
They only (possible) downsode is that you won't have access to the Fonera network.

First question is why you would need a FritzBox 7390, as the Belgacom BBox2 should basically offer you what you need.

As the previous poster already mentioned, unless you are a Business user, Belgacom "triple pay" (Pack Telephony, Internet and TV) is normally not VoIP, but analogue phone. Hence no need for a VoIP capable router.

Even if you would have VoIP (i-Talk), the Belgacom supplied modem (BBox2) should also do the job. Belgacom Voip is not over the internet, but a separate VLAN on your DSL conncetion (VLAN20). This adds some complexity to run a FritzBox for i-Talk.

Last but not least, you talk about connecting a FritzBox behind your modem. In that case, it does not make sense to buy a VDSL2 capable FritzBox, but the cheaper models (e.g. 7270) will do the job though!

To summarise you have 2 options:
  • - a FritzBox 7390 (VDSL2) to replace the BBox2 (but i_Talk might be a challenge).
    - any FritzBox behind the BBox2 (set the FritzBox to use "Internet via LAN1")
VoIP: EDPnet (gratis vaste lijn), Sipgate.de, Sipgate.co.uk, MegaVoip.
Provider: EDPnet Fiber XS (150/50 mbps down/up).
Modem/Router: Fritz!Box 5590 Fiber, OS 8.03, Fritz!SFP GPON aangesloten op Proximus ONTP.
Telefoon centrale: Euracom 181 achter FritzBox So. 3 Fritz!DECT toestellen
TV: Telenet CI+, Fritz!DVB-C.

Hello everybody,

Many thanks for your helpful replies. I will go for the 7390 solution and replace the BBox2. In fact, I need a VPN capable router to switch my domotic devices via a smartphone; as the the system I am using is German, the easiest way for me to do this is using a German router just copying the setup instructions from my VPN provider.

Again many thanks

Please note that you will need the international version of the FritzBox 7390 to work in Belgium. The German one will not work (at least not out-of-the-box). The FritzBoxes sold for the Swiss/Austrian market will work (they have the same Firmare as the international 7390.
