FCC approves net neutrality rules, reclassifies broadband as a utility
It's a good day for proponents of an open internet: The Federal Communications Commission just approved its long-awaited network neutrality plan, which reclassifies broadband internet as a Title II public utility and gives the agency more regulatory power in the process. And unlike the FCC's last stab at net neutrality in 2010, today's new rules also apply to mobile broadband. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler laid out the basic gist of the plan earlier this month -- it'll ban things like paid prioritization, a tactic some ISPs used to get additional fees from bandwidth-heavy companies like Netflix, as well as the slowdown of "lawful content." But now Wheeler's vision is more than just rhetoric; it's something the FCC can actively enforce.

"Grap" van Verizon ja. Zij vergelijken de uitspraak met terugkeren naar "de technologische oudheid" waarbij geen innovatie meer mogelijk zal zijn en heeft daarom hun persbericht in morse uitgestuurd
“Today’s decision by the FCC to encumber broadband Internet services with badly antiquated regulations is a radical step that presages a time of uncertainty for consumers, innovators and investors. Over the past two decades a bipartisan, light- touch policy approach unleashed unprecedented investment and enabled the broadband Internet age consumers now enjoy.
“The FCC today chose to change the way the commercial Internet has operated since its creation. Changing a platform that has been so successful should be done, if at all, only after careful policy analysis, full transparency, and by the legislature, which is constitutionally charged with determining policy. As a result, it is likely that history will judge today’s actions as misguided.
“The FCC’s move is especially regrettable because it is wholly unnecessary. The FCC had targeted tools available to preserve an open Internet, but instead chose to use this order as an excuse to adopt 300- plus pages of broad and open- ended regulatory arcana that will have unintended negative consequences for consumers and various parts of the Internet ecosystem for years to come.
“What has been and will remain constant before, during and after the existence of any regulations is Verizon’s commitment to an open Internet that provides consumers with competitive broadband choices and Internet access when, where, and how they want.”

Dit is een puur Amerikaanse uitspraak, maar nu daar die stap gezet is, is de kans realistischer dat als het debat hier ook concreet wordt het diezelfde richting uit kan gaan.

Ik ben voor net neutrality, maar soms snap ik niet uberhaupt waarom er zoveel discussie over is, of wordt ze misschien gevoerd door mensen die het niet begrijpen.
De providers snap ik, zij zien een nieuwe markt, premium content laten betalen voor betere beschikbaarheid, throughput etc, diensten van concurrenten benadelen etc.
Maar stel je voor dat morgen de wegbeheerder zegt:

Iedereen 80 km / h
bmw, mercedes, audi mogen 140 km / h
Dat zou eerlijk zijn. Wij moeten allemaal 120 rijden omdat de zwakste van de klas ook de baan op gaat.
Wel baseren op objectieve veiligheid (remafstand, echte veiligheid zoals airbags, ...) tov snelheid, niet het merk (al is er een enorm hoge correlatie merk<>veiligheid)
Van mij mogen ze helemaal onveilige auto's van de autostrade verbieden en enkel op zijbaantjes laten rijden. En autostrade dan 180 maken.

Maar effe serieus:
FCC heeft nu die machtiging gekregen, vraag is of het effectief toegepast wordt. Uiteindelijk is bijna hele top van FCC bestaand uit mensen uit ISP wereld.
